The Salem City Council will be asked at its meeting Monday night to allow the Bicentennial Park and Sweney’s Corner to be used for a downtown Christmas Event on Saturday, December 4th.

The city, YMCA and downtown retailers are working together on the event that would include possibly include craft vendors, some food sales, and other festive activities including the arrival of Santa Claus.

The council is also expected to discuss Friday’s four pm dedication ceremony to officially open the new inclusive playground in Bryan Memorial Park. City Manager Rex Barbee says other amenities and improvements for the park that are part of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources grant yet to be installed can be opened at a later date without much fanfare.

The city council meeting begins at six Monday night at Salem City Hall.
