The starting enrollment of Salem Community High School has grown 42 students from the end of last school year.
Principal John Boles reported 722 students are starting the school year, compared to the 680 who were in attendance last year. He notes some are returning following homeschooling last year during COVID-19 while a number have moved into the district. There are 192 freshmen, 199 sophomores, 160 juniors, and 171 seniors.
Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering updated the board on summer construction projects. Work is completed in the band and choir rooms except the new carpeting that is expected to arrive in about a month. He reports students will still be able to use the rooms although acoustics won’t be the best. Only punch list items remain on the girl’s locker room project. The track resurfacing and football lighting projects are done. Detering says the track is once again open to the public with a button available to turn on the lights for nighttime walking.
The board held a public hearing at the beginning of the meeting on the issuance of bonds to pay for a major renovation project at the school next summer. There were no comments. Detering says the district will move to actually issue the bonds at its September meeting.
The board accepted a letter of intent to retire from Stacey Beavin at the conclusion of the 2024-25 school year.
The board hired Brendan (Pete) Colclasure as a certified teacher and Lynnsey Heinzmann as a paraprofessional.
the board hired Michelle Blomberg as the girls’ tennis coach. Three assistant boys basketball coaches were hired. They are Dakota Koehnke, Jason Lewis, and Tyler Parrish. The board approved Kenyatta Harris as volunteer assistant boys’ basketball coach.
