The long stalemate over the appointment of a new sheriff in Clinton County is over.

The Clinton County Board Monday night unanimously named Acting Chief Deputy Dan Travous to complete the term of former Sheriff Doug Maue who resigned at the end of May.

The stalemate developed when the Clinton County Republican Party nominated Albers Police Chief Brian Vielweber.   But he fell two votes short of approval of the county board.   When Maue left, Coroner Phil Moss was named acting sheriff.   The stalemate was finally broken when the Republican Party rescinded their earlier recommendation and asked that Travous be appointed and Johnson moved for his appointment at Monday night’s meeting.

Travous was sworn in after the meeting to serve as sheriff until after the November 2022 election.

In other action, the board voted against reappointing Dr. Deanna DuComb to the County Health Department Board on a 10-4 vote.  Two other members were reappointed, Terri Linton and Stacy Albers.

The board voted to revive a project first started in 2005 to construct a new animal control facility that would also include storage space for the sheriff’s department.   Netemeyer Engineering was asked to revise the original plans with minor changes.   The revised plans will come before the county board for possible action next month.

The Clinton County Board also went on record in support of the Prairie State Energy Campus near Marissa to remain open.   A Clean Energy Plan stalled in the state legislature would set a timetable for the Energy Campus to close as coal energy is phased out.
