Keep Salem Beautiful and the Daffy Dill Garden Club have announced the winners of the downtown flower box decorating contest.
The first-place winner is Rural Health and Wellness. Their planter box is located on the north side of the 200 block of West Main. Nurse Practitioner Crea Rose explained their design.
“The theme this year was for silver bells. My receptionist just happens to be very artsy and crafty, so she came up with the great idea of painting some flowerpots. She painted some flowerpots, she made a lot of the bows. She came up with the design, and then we all just kind of added to it.”
As first place winner, Rural Health and Wellness received a $500 prize.
Second place went to Marion County Savings Bank. Their box is located in the 100 block of East Main just east of South Broadway. Marketing Director Jeannie Fernhaber explains their concept.
“We were just discussing how great downtown always looks come Christmas time,” Fernhaber said. “We love how everyone comes together as a community and puts all the decorations up. We were just talking about old movies and decided since silver bells was the theme, every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings from the old movie, sounded like great fun. We came in with the silver bells theme and decided to go with an angel and put it all together.”
Second place prize is $300.
Third place went to the Bryan Bennett Library which decorated a box in the 200 block of West Main Street. Librarian Jody Trinkle:
“It’s an arch covered with silver bells, and inside each of the bells, instead of a ringer there is a little book,” Trinkle said. “There’s a little picture of a laminated book in each one of them, and each book has to do with the winter season.”
Third place prize is $200.
