A construction worker on the I-64 improvement project near the Woodlawn exit was injured Friday morning when he ran into the construction site while coming to work.
Illinois State Police say no other vehicle was involved in the crash in a closed section of lanes undergoing construction. The driver, whose name has not been released, struck construction barrels, the bar assemblies, and the steel rebar material.
Jefferson Fire officials say the driver said he became confused when he ran into the construction site. Some of the rebar broke through the bottom floorboard of the car with one of the rebar going through the driver’s leg.
The driver was transported to an area hospital.
The crash occurred at 6:35 Friday morning at milepost 69.
