A Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy has been honored with the State Police Director’s Award of Distinction.

Deputy Devin Elliott was presented the award by State Police Director Brendan Kelly during a ceremony at the West Side Christian Church in Springfield, IL.

The award is for Deputy Elliott’s quick actions as he was one of the first to arrive for an emergency call for assistance during the May 9th, 2023 incident on Interstate 64 near Mt. Vernon when two State Troopers became involved in an altercation and gunfire when trying to aid a stranded motorist.  Deputy Elliott assisted Trooper Timothy Harper in providing cover to Sergeant Boguslaw Kramarz who had been shot.    The deputy also quickly assessed the scene and injuries with little knowledge of the state of the suspect.  As additional help arrived, Elliott immediately loaded Sergeant Kramarz in his squad car and drove him to the hospital.

It was later learned the suspect was fatally shot and was pronounced dead on the scene.   Sergeant Kramarz sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries.   Trooper Harper was not hurt.

Kramarz was presented the Medal for Valor and Purple Heart Medal while Trooper Harper received the Medal for Valor.
