Raccoon Grade School holds unique ‘drive-through’ Christmas program

In a normal year, it’s the students who perform the Christmas program.  But in a crazy year where COVID-19 restrictions are blocking many normal school activities, Raccoon Grade School Superintendent Misty Johannes wasn’t ready to let Christmas go without some type of celebration.

“This is our first annual Christmas drive-through. This year we knew that we could not have a Christmas program and we did not do a lot of activities in person, so we were thinking outside of the box, ‘what could we do to bring some Christmas spirit to the families,’ so we got together with the teachers and we decided to come up with different themes, and tonight families are lining up and driving through each theme.”

Johannes says the entire staff took a ‘role’ in the various displays that were set up for students and their parents to enjoy.

“The first part is ‘Elf on the Shelf.’ Then you go to our snowman and they have inflatable snowman costumes. Then, you drive around and you will see the Polar Express with our neat train and the movie playing, again with the Polar Express music. Then you’ll find the Grinch and see Santa in his sleigh, and then at the very end are the elves handing out the goody bags,” Johannes explained.

The students were having fun recognizing their teachers in their Christmas get-ups as they drove through the display.

Johannes says the event was fun, but she’s looking forward to normal activities return to the school.
