2024 07/10 – James ‘Jim’ Arthur Scoville

By Bruce Kropp Jul 10, 2023 | 12:34 PM

James “Jim” Arthur Scoville, 85, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 9:04 am July 7, 2024, at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon. He was born on February 26, 1939, in Montier, Missouri to the late Edmond and Emma (Summers) Scoville.

Jim cherished his family. He married his high school sweetheart, Sue Davis on February 17, 1962. They were married for over sixty-two years. Jim served many years in the Navy where he was Petty Officer 3rd Class. After the Navy, he went to work for IBM as a field engineer. On call, he often was called out at night to avert a crisis, which he did without complaining. His honesty and integrity grounded his life.

Jim deeply loved his children. From listening to early readers over and over to catching endless balls to bringing school projects to life, and attending innumerable concerts and ballgames, his care was evident.

Jim invested in his community. He was faithful to his local churches where he served as a deacon and loved singing in the choir. He was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church. He served on the Rome School, volunteered for many building projects including Habitat for Humanity, served on the Red Cross Board, and was a member of the American Legion.

A gifted athlete himself, in later years he enjoyed refining his golf skills. As a talented craftsman, you would often find him building a toy for grandchildren, a keepsake piece of furniture, or fixing something broken. He enjoyed his yard immensely, designing and upkeeping an oasis for wildlife.

Jim is survived by his wife, Sue; daughter, Debbie and her husband, Rick; grandchildren, Allison, Luke, Katlyn, (Sonny), Nick, and Seth; son, Steve and his wife, Linda; and grandchildren, Sydney, Sadie, and Sophie.

A Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 10, 2024, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 pm with Reverend Alan Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
