Salem Police and Fire were able to put out a fire Sunday night on what remained of two rear tires on a camper vehicle being pulled by a pickup truck.
Frank Swearingen of Troy, Ohio had continued to drive the camper after first one and then a second rear tire had blown. The portion of the tire wrapped around the axle was burning as Sweringen pulled off the southbound exit ramp of I-57 at the West Main Street exit.
Salem Police using a fire extinguisher was able to knock down the fire. Firemen then cooled the axle to prevent any further issues.
The incident occurred around 10 Sunday night.
