2024 06/20 – Michael ‘Mike’ Shannon O’Dea, Jr

Michael “Mike” Shannon O’Dea, Jr., 72, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 2:03 pm June 14, 2024, at Helia Healthcare of Benton in Benton, Illinois.

He was born August 15, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois to Michael Shannon O’Dea, Sr. and Margie Louise (Ross) Womack. Mike married Vickie Lynn (Mayo) O’Dea on July 17, 1980.

In addition to his beloved wife of nearly forty-four years, Mike is survived by his children, Michael Shannon O’Dea III and wife, Janice of Longview, Texas and Christopher Shawn O’Dea of Murray, Kentucky; grandson, Matthew O’Dea; brothers, John Womack of Mount Vernon, Illinois and Eric Womack and wife Jolyn of Sesser, Illinois; and nephews, Justin Womack and wife, Bree and Joshua “Josh” Womack.

Mike was preceded in death by his step father who raised him, Glenn Womack, Jr.; mother, Margie Womack; paternal grandfather, Riley Ross; paternal grandmother, Rebecca Rose Cassada Ross; paternal step-grandmother, Amanda Cassada Pitman Ross; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He attended Edison Grade School before attending seventh grade in Bremerhaven, Germany. Mike attended school his eighth grade and freshman year in Mount Vernon, before returning to Germany for his sophomore year. Mike left Germany at the beginning of his junior year and returned to Mount Vernon Township High School where he graduated in 1969. While in high school, Mike worked at the Mount Vernon Burger Chef and Taco Villa. He was also employed locally by Uncle Charlie’s Meat Company and Dowzer Electric.

Mike worked for Phillips Petro Company and Collins Brothers Oil Company as an Oil and Gas Landman. He worked for Collins Brothers Oil Company for thirty-nine years retiring in 2022 as general manager. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #819 and served as the Exalted Ruler in 1989, a benefactor life member of the NRA, and Illinois State Rifle Association. Mike was known for his funny stories, knowledge of motorcycles, and all things guns and ammo. His passions in life were Rock and Roll music and his Harleys.

A Visitation will be held Thursday, June 20, 2024, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 pm with Pastor Steve Edwards officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Mike’s honor to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Shiners Hospitals for Children.
