Betty L. Shields, age 101, of Mt. Vernon, died at 1:00 PM, Monday, June 10, 2024, at Crossroads Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Shields was born in Mt. Vernon, on March 11, 1923, to Walter P. and Ferne I. (Purcell) Whitlock. Betty married Harry W. Shields on March 15, 1941, in Jackson, Missouri, and he preceded her in death on July 10, 2002.
Betty was a life-long member of Logan Street Baptist church where she was, for years, in the church choir, and taught Sunday school. Betty graduated from Mt. Vernon Township High School, class of 1941. She was retired, after many years of secretarial positions for city and county offices, as well as other local businesses.
Mrs. Shields is survived by two sons, Harry L. Shields and wife Sherry of Largo, Florida, and Larry R. Shields and wife Doris of Mt. Vernon; three grandchildren, James G. Shields and wife Leilani, Kristi K. Shields, and Stephanie Green and husband Randy; four great-grandchildren, Nick K. Green and Alicia, Tori R. Shoemaker and husband Jordan, Hunter Shields and wife, and Zoey Shields; sister-in-law, Janice Metcalf Shields Krehbiel; and many nieces and nephews. Betty was soon to become a great-great-grandmother to Nick and Alicia’s baby girl.
Mrs. Shields was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers, and a sister.
Funeral services for Mrs. Shields will be held at 12:00 p.m. (noon), on http://www.osbornfuneral.comSaturday, June 15, 2024, at the Osborn Funeral Home in Dix, with Marty Mills officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, in Mt. Vernon. Visitation will be held Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Osborn Funeral Home, from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service.
