Illinois lawmakers are calling for hearings on the state’s response to COVID-19.
In a bipartisan virtual press conference, Senator Sue Rezin of Morris said there should be more transparency about why decisions are being made and that legislators need to have a voice during the pandemic.
“I understand the seriousness of this pandemic and I do not take it lightly. But the reality is we are 8 months into the pandemic and the General Assembly should have a say and a seat at the table to be allowed to ask questions.”
Rezin and her colleague Representative La Shawn Ford of Chicago are asking legislative leaders to set up the meetings.
“We get called every day in our office and the current processes that the governor is using, I commend them and the entire team on the mitigation efforts. But I do know we need all hands on deck.”
The two say there are many concerns to discuss including extra restrictions on bars and restaurants and the struggle between tenants who can’t afford to pay rent because of COVID and the landlords needing that income.
Ford says it would also be a good idea to set up a State Coronavirus Task Force with members representing several areas.
