Salem Grade School Superintendent Dr. Leslie Foppe has announced the district will go on full remote learning starting Friday through Thursday, November 19th.
She reports the action is being taken because several staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 and others have been placed on quarantine. Foppe said it was becoming difficult to find enough substitute teachers. Teachers who are quarantined, who are able, will teach from their homes, while others who are not quarantined will be allowed to continue to teach remotely from their classroom.
In addition, Foppe says a growing number of students are being placed on quarantine because of close contact with those with COVID-19. That number currently totals 96 students between Hawthorne and Franklin Park Schools.
While the district has been using foggers and doing deep cleaning each night, Foppe says even more cleaning will be done during the full remote learning break.
Foppe says they will be supplying food for students breakfast and lunch, following the same system as during full remote learning in the spring. They will deliver to the same places: Salem Mobile Home Park, Salem Community Center, Bryan Bennett Library, Salem Elks building, and Marion County Housing East. The district will be delivering multiple meals at a time and the dates will be as follows: Monday, November 9, Thursday, November 12, and Monday, November 16. The times will be the same as spring, between 11 and 11:20 each of those days.
