2023 03/26 – Beverly Joyce York Higginson

Beverly Joyce York Higginson, 90, passed away at home on March 15, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas surrounded by her family.

Born November 3, 1933, in Mount Vernon, Illinois, she was the daughter of Clarence E and Opal M (Skinner) York. She married Jerry Alden Higginson in Mount Vernon, on April 24, 1955, and resided in Mount Vernon and Salem, Illinois prior to relocating to San Antonio Texas in 1982.

She graduated in 1951 from Mount Vernon Township High School and raised a family in Salem. She worked as a secretary for the Salem Police Department, World Color Press, NBC Bank San Antonio and eventually retired as a Mortgage Lender for KB Homes in 1998. As an organizer, she helped plan her High School Reunions, keeping in touch with many of her remaining classmates by phone calls and emails.

She was a devoted spouse, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who always cared for and supported her family. After retiring she was the primary sitter for her grandchildren. She was a prolific writer and talker. She loved traveling, shopping, genealogy, antiquing, attending theatre and enjoyed sewing, singing, reading, and gardening until recently. She loved singing to her grandchildren many songs, with a favorite “You Are My Sunshine”. Proclaiming not to be a good cook, she loved cooking from scratch, three served meals daily to her family. She will be remembered for her extravagant passion for celebrating the Christmas holidays with all the family every year. She was a member of the Community of Christ Church for 70 years. Most of all she was totally dedicated to her husband and being surrounded by children and grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons, Michael Allynn Higginson and wife, Brenda; and Jerry Alden (Jay) Higginson Jr. and wife, Leah, all in San Antonio; Grandchildren: Jeremy (Sara) Higginson, Dawn (Adan) Davila, Eric Higginson, Sara (Matthew) Gallion of Escondido CA, and Jon Higginson, of San Antonio, TX; Great-grandchildren, Joshua, Joseph. Jayden, and Samantha Higginson, Victoria, and Dannielle Davila; Hayden Gallion and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces. Also surviving are siblings, Charles York, and Emily Edwards of Mount Vernon, Il, and a sister-in-law Judy (Larry) Mahan of Live Oak, Florida.

She was predeceased by her husband of 76 years in January 2022, her parents, and siblings, Clarence York (Martha), Jr, Billy Joe York (Margaret), Mary Tracy (William), Nedra Hayes (Ray), and Sister-in-law Ortus Lee Dunbar (Roger).

Visitation will be at Sunset Memorial Home from 6 pm-8 pm, on March 26, 2024. Services and internment will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas on March 27, 2024.
