2024 03/21 – Billy J. Hamburg

Billy J. Hamburg, 77, of Centralia, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois.

He was born July 31, 1946, in Centralia, Illinois Howard Hamburg and Ella (Meadows) Hamburg Warren. He married Pauletta Cross on May 15, 1970, and she preceded him in death on October 18, 2023.

Billy is survived by his son: Jeff Hamburg and fiancé Krista Colliver of Centralia; grandson: Hunter Hamburg and wife Megan of Centralia; step grandchildren: Mariska Mankle of Teutopolis, Kyle Mankle of Teutopolis, and McKenzie Colliver of Centralia; great-grandson: Karder and a great-granddaughter: Kacie; one brother: Richard Warren of Centralia; four sisters: Sandy Owens of Centralia, Karen Schaffer and husband Larry of Sandoval, Connie Atteberry of Junction City, and Debbie Kirgan of Centralia; a brother-in-law: Orus Cecil Cross of Reddick; a sister-in-law: Mary “Momma B” Benzschawel of Centralia; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Howard Hamburg, Ella Warren, and Virgil Warren, wife: Pauletta Hamburg, son: Brian “Potsie” Potts, five brothers: Leroy Hamburg, James Warren, Donald Warren, David Warren, and Ronald Warren, a sister: Sherrie Warren, a daughter-in-law: Debbie Hamburg; and brother-in-law: Kenneth Benzschawel.

Billy worked as a Forklift driver and in the warehouse for several years at the Hollywood Candy Factory and also at Gilster Mary Lee in Centralia until his retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. Billy was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and loved watching old Westerns. He cherished the time he spent with his family, friends, and four-legged companion: Coco.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 2:00 PM at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia with Pastor Therese Melena officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday from noon until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Paradise Cemetery in Salem.
