The Salem Fire Protection District handled the largest fire on a Red Flag Saturday but say they were helped by the fire burning towards the road in helping them to extinguish it.

The fire was on the Dan Miller property at 5718 Tonti Road.  It spread from a trash fire into a cut cornfield.   Firemen were on the scene for about 30 minutes beginning at two pm.

The Centralia Fire Department put out two illegal fires after the city’s burn weekend was called off Saturday morning due to the fire danger from the low humidity, dry conditions, and brisk winds.   Neither fire had gotten out of control.

The burn ban remains in place in Centralia.   Fire Chief John Lynch says he will re-evaluate the situation after the forecasted rain on Sunday and Monday.

Sandoval Firemen were called to a trash fire in the 300 block of East Ninth Street in Junction City around five Saturday evening that got out of hand and started a grass fire.  While residents got the grass fire out, it had spread to a dead tree and flames were showing 20 to 30 feet up in the air.  A pumper truck was used to reach the upper part of the tree and put it out.
