An investigation is underway into a car crash and fire in rural Odin that resulted in the death of the apparent driver of the vehicle.

Odin Fire Chief Greg Smith says they were called out to the fire on a closed section of the Farthing Road just south of Community Beach Road when a nearby property owner called to report seeing smoke.   He reports on arrival, the fire was still burning but most of the car and tires had been destroyed.  They then spotted a badly burned body that appeared to be in the driver’s seat.   At that time, the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Coroner, and State Fire Marshal’s office were called to investigate.

A Marion County Sheriff’s official says the department is investigating the incident as a traffic crash.   The vehicle had run off the closed section of the road before it apparently caught fire.

The Marion County Coroner is working on identifying the person in the vehicle.

Smith says someone had moved some of the barriers that had been placed up to keep traffic from entering the section of road that is close due to a bridge being out.
