Carl W. Dunn, 92, of Belleville, formerly of Centralia, passed away Monday, January 29, 2024, peacefully at the Dammert Care Center at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville.www.sutherlandfuneralhome.com or the funeral home’s Facebook Page.
Mr. Dunn came into this life a little over 92 years ago on December 15, 1931, in Centralia. He was the son of Robert Dunn and Elizabeth (Wise) Dunn. He married the love of his life on September 2, 1964, and Ann (Oakes) Dunn survives him in Belleville. In addition to his wife of nearly 60 years, Mr. Dunn is survived by his two sons: John Paul “JP” Dunn and wife Jenny of Makanda and Stephen Carl Dunn and wife Vicky of Belleville; grandchildren: Christopher Dunn (Mark), Emily Dunn, Katelyn Mowell, and Taylor Mowell fiance (Blase); and many nieces and nephews. When Mr. Dunn passed, he was reunited with his parents: Robert and Elizabeth Dunn; sisters: Ellen Riechman, Eleanor Blaise, and Mae Frances Wilson, and his brother: Robert Dunn. Mr. Dunn lived a long and eventful life. He was in the National Guard and a Korean War Veteran. He was a strong pillar in the Centralia community. Mr. Dunn was a member of the VFW Post 2055, Knights of Columbus, a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, Social Justice Committee, Calvary Cemetery Committee, Lector and Eucharistic Minister, on the Parish Council, and a long-standing member of the St. Mary Catholic Church. He owned Carl Dunn’s Radio and TV Repair in town too and enjoyed woodworking in his free time. He enjoyed going on family vacations, gardening, and taking care of his yard. He was one of the first EMTs for Centralia. He may also be remembered for working for the Centralia Fire Department where he retired from the position of Fire Marshal after 32 years of service. He also worked for the OFSM in Fire Prevention for the State of Illinois as a Fire Marshal for 12 years. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the St. Mary Catholic Church on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 11:00 am with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Centralia with military rites at the grave by the American Legion Post 446 and V.F.W. Post 2055. A visitation will be held at the church before the service on Saturday, February 3, 2024, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Mary Church or School or to the Centralia Humane Society and can be accepted by Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home at 235 N.
