The Centralia Halloween Parade committee has selected the Grand Marshal for this year’s parade.
Parade Chair Butch Mathis made the announcement at Thursday night’s parade committee meeting.
“The pick for this year’s 96th annual Halloween Parade, I want to introduce Ms. Mimi Hawkins.”
Mathis says they considered several potential grand marshals but felt Hawkins was most deserving because of her volunteer work.
“Christmas for Kids with ABATE, what you do during Thanksgiving, and what you do for Thanksgiving, you should be recognized for what you do for the community.”
But Hawkins was quick to say it was not her alone.
“I’m very honored, but it takes a village in order to do a lot of charity work. I have so many friends and family that have always helped me and I’m so appreciative to them. I feel like I need to walk in the parade, but I need to take them all with me because it definitely takes them all. But I am very, very honored and I’m very surprised that I got this because you are just supposed to help in your community and not get awarded for it. But I am thankful.”
Hawkins also emphasized she is proud to be a Centralia resident.
“A lot of times our community gets a little flack about different things but our community is awesome and always comes together. When I say community, I mean the surrounding community too. Everyone works together and everyone takes care of the community. That’s what I absolutely love about living here.”
Hawkins will lead the Halloween Parade which is scheduled for seven Saturday night, October 27th.
Mathis said entries have been slow in coming in, but he hopes that will improve as the October 19th entry deadline approaches. As of now, there are 30 entries. The application form is available on the Centralia Halloween and Fall Festival website.
