The Salem Community High School Board has approved the budget for the current school year. It includes $10.7-million in expenditures and 10-million in revenues for a $718,000 deficit. However, the budget still projects an end of year fund balance of $9.8-million.
Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering says the $771,706 deficit in the building and operations fund is by design as they pay for a $2-million cafeteria and kitchen renovation through cash flow. He anticipates most of the $62,000 deficit in the educational fund and $49,439 in the transportation fund will largely wash out during the year.
The board began discussion on summer improvements for next year. Detering explains what is being considered.
“Changing out some tile in the hallways and giving it an overall facelift to the halls and lockers. Get some more Salem Wildcat green in our hallways. As well as the replacement of all the stair treads. Because we’ve got some stair treads that are damaged and they need replaced. Its really a safety issue we are going to take care of.”
Detering says a final decision on summer work will likely come at the January or February meeting.
There was no public comment on the district’s E-learning plan which allows for up to five days of remote learning in place of snow days. Detering says the use of e-learning allows the district to better project end of school year dates.
The board agreed to make a $2,548 donation to the Shriner’s, which is 40-percent of the gate from the Salem-Centralia Shrine football game.
The board accepted the resignation of Coleton Harness as assistant football coach. The board employed Ryan Bennett and Chris Watkins, Junior as part-time assistant football coaches. Maliyah Hamilton was hired as assistant bowling coach pending certification. Danielle Conner was hired as a kitchen helper. Kyle Ledbetter was promoted from part-time to full-time technology assistant.
