The Centralia City School Board approved a new electric supply contract at the board meeting on Tuesday. The new contract with Homefield Energy will go into effect upon the end of the district’s current contract and last for 36 months at a fixed rate. The new price per kilowatt hour will be an increase from what the district currently pays, but the cost will continue to be offset significantly by the district’s solar power.
Several renovations and purchases were approved during the meeting, including sixty teacher desks at a total cost of $31,500 with money from the Teacher Vacancy Grant. Other purchases approved in the meeting include the iReady program for the school year for $50,516 using Title I grant money. Sidewalk improvement at Centralia Junior High was paid for with $40,186 in maintenance grant funds. Door replacement at the William Walker Educational Facility at a cost of $40,466. Finally, door and window replacements at Centralia Junior High were funded at a cost of $45,976.
In the curriculum report, Chris Becker reported reading test scores at the beginning of the year have made improvements from previous years at all grade levels. She credited the work of teachers, particularly collaboration during group planning periods, as a key factor in the improvement.
The school board has begun looking to fill the position of Lyle Gross, who has vacated his seat on the board.
