Salem Police Chief Kyle Ambuehl says members of the department will begin utilizing body cams on June 15th.
He announced at Monday night’s city council meeting that training on usage of the cameras is now underway.
“It’s part of their training know they ahve to activate and use them. Community caretaking is going to be handled a little bit different. So if its not an actual law enforcement activity where they are dealing with an incident that there’s possibly an arrest or something of that nature.”
Ambuehl says more new equipment is on the way.
“Once we get the in-car camera’s then they will be linked together and they will work in conjunction with each other.”
Ambuehl says they will also maintain the gun cameras that automatically turn on whenever an officer removes a gun from a holster.
The city is putting the body cams into operation before a state deadline to have them in place.
