The speaker at the Centralia Memorial Day program at Hillcrest Memorial Park says he should celebrate the lives of our fallen heroes as we mourn their loss.
Commander William Adams, Retired US Navy, says Memorial Day is a time to remember the men and women who have given their lives to this great country while reflecting on their courage and sacrifice to a cause greater than themselves.
“We can assure that the memories of these heroes and their sacrifices are not in vain. We can ensure that future generations understand the importance of service, sacrifice and honor. We can ensure through our own community service that our country remains strong, free and prosperous.”
Adams notes those who have lost their lives come from the same diverse population as the US itself, with the only commonality of taking the oath to protect.
The program included a Flag Folding Ceremony and the Laying of the Wreaths at the sacred shrine by a large number of community groups as well as the Mayors of Centralia, Wamac, and Central City.
The Hillcrest Memorial staff placed small US flags at the gravesites of all 2,500 veterans buried at the cemetery for Memorial Day.
