Ramírez’s 2-run double in ninth leads Guardians past Cardinals

CLEVELAND (AP) — José Ramírez hit a two-run double with two out in the ninth inning, lifting the Cleveland Guardians to a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Ramírez’s clutch hit off Ryan Helsley rolled to the wall in right-center, scoring Myles Straw and Steven Kwan, who had drawn one-out walks. The swing touched off a wild celebration for the Guardians, who have struggled to get clutch hits throughout the first two months of the season. Cleveland’s players stormed out of the dugout to playfully pound Ramírez, who threw his helmet high into the air between second and third base. Xzavion Curry pitched three scoreless innings for his first major league win.

Hot-hitting rookie McLain, Steer lead Reds past Cubs 8-5 for 3-game sweep

CHICAGO (AP) — Matt McLain had a career-high four hits in his 12th big league game, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the slumping Chicago Cubs 8-5 for a three-game series sweep. Spencer Steer hit a two-run homer in Cincinnati’s fourth win in its last five games. Kevin Newman reached five times on two singles and three walks, and Nick Senzel had two hits and two RBIs. Cincinnati outscored Chicago 25-10 in the weekend set. The Reds totaled 14 hits in the finale against their NL Central rival. Patrick Wisdom homered twice and drove in five runs in Chicago’s fourth straight loss.

Haase’s sacrifice fly helps Tigers to comeback win over White Sox

DETROIT (AP) — Eric Haase’s 10th-inning sacrifice fly gave the Detroit Tigers a 6-5 win over the Chicago White Sox. Alex Lange (3-0) pitched a scoreless top of the 10th, and Jonathan Schoop’s long fly ball off Reynaldo Lopez (4-4) moved Spencer Torkelson to third with one out. Akil Baddoo was intentionally walked and Haase hit a fly ball to deep center to easily score Torkelson. The Tigers trailed 5-4 going into the bottom of the ninth, but Riley Greene hit a one-out triple off Joe Kelly. Javier Baez followed with a grounder to short. Tim Anderson didn’t field it cleanly and had to throw to first, allowing Greene to score the tying run.
