Kaskaskia College graduates were encouraged to go boldly after their dreams, stand tall, and do great things during Friday night’s commencement.
The words of encouragement came from College President George Evans who noted students had persevered to complete their studies over obstacles in their lives and on campus.
“It is important to keep moving forward through the tough times rather than standing still and reflecting upon the past. Never be complacent. Never. Never settle for less than you deserve. Remember, tough times never last but tough people with an optimistic mindset and determination always will. Because you are sitting here today decked out in your blue, I am confident you are ready to conquer the next challenges in your life. Graduates congratulations.”
Evans’s address came after Board Chair Bill Hawley gave similar encouragement in his welcome.
“I wish you the strength and grace to make the choices for life that will allow you to spread your wings and reach your full potential. We believe in you and we look forward to great things from you. After all, you are our hope for the future.”
The student address was Student Council President Alyssa Lurkins. She used the college’s initials KC to offer suggestions to the graduates.
“If you are kind to everyone you meet you will go far in life. Be kind to your family, your co-workers, your neighbors, and your community. Be kind to children, the elderly, animals, and the earth. Also, be kind to yourself. Don’t be too hard on yourself and take time to do what you love. Our next word is courageous. Be courageous in your decisions. Don’t say you can’t achieve something. When you fail, be courageous and get back up. Stand up for what you believe in. When you see someone being treated badly, be courageous and step in. Don’t set back and watch. Be courageous in your career, your relationships, and as a parent.”
Lurkins also encouraged students who had numerous struggles to get their degrees to be proud of what they accomplished and noted they are the future.
While 270 students received their certificates and degrees at the ceremony, a total of 890 students completed a certificate or degree program this year.
