Kaskaskia College marked the 10th Anniversary of the Jim Beasley Veterans Memorial on the main college campus by remembering committee members who have passed away.
A balloon was released for each of them after their names were read. They include former College President Dr. Jim Underwood who had the initial vision with Board of Trustee member Jim Beasley. Others honored were Roy Aarons, Frank Beasley, Kathryn Beasley, Dr. Eugene Clarke, Bob Day, Bob Gaffner, Ed Kleber, Deb Kleiboeker, Joe Kurwicki, Les Moulton, Tom Nicholay, Chuck Simpson, Frank Smith, and Jim Wham.
Beasley opened the ceremony by noting the importance of patriotism, noting it is the absolute backbone of the country and that without it the country would be lost.
“We have put on this wall here about 55,000 names and they were all patriots. Some gave the ultimate sacrifice of giving their lives. Bless their hearts and God bless them. Without that kind of support in this country, we are somewhat doomed. So it is up to each and every one of us to do what we can to instill patriotism in our grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and our friends and schoolmates. And with that, we are going to survive and survive well.”
College Marketing Director Travis Henson then directed the US Flag to be raised over the project to remember Dr. Underwood and others who served.
College President George Evans says the college will continue to remember the vision and the tribute will never die.
“This college will ensure that the sacrifices made by all will never be forgotten. It is our role as educators to make sure the past is not repeated. To make sure that those who were born at a time of peace will know the sacrifice you have made and the sacrifice those on the wall have made. That’s our job. That is my job. I promise you we will continue that job.”
Evans asked everyone to thank a veteran and if possible to volunteer to assist at one of the many veteran organizations in the college district.
Beasley closed the program by noting the committee has an ongoing critical and active role in the future of the Veterans Memorial that carries his name.
