Carmen Lee Self, 94, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 9:54 am March 31, 2023, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor.

She was born January 11, 1929, in Centralia, Illinois to the late Clyde E. and Elsie (Lee) Hawkins. Carmen married Eddie M. Self, Jr. on March 25, 1951, in Mount Vernon, Illinois. They were blessed with nearly sixty years of marriage before he preceded her in death on December 4, 2010.

Carmen is survived by her children, Edward Self, III  and wife, Karen of The Woodlands, Texas, Lesa Mann and husband, Gary of Mount Vernon, Illinois, and Clyde Self and wife, Martha of Nashville, Tennessee; daughter-in-law, Sherry Self of Woodlawn, Illinois; grandchildren, Whitney Keyser and husband, Chris of Nashville, Tennessee, Ethan Self and wife, Kelsey of Farragut, Tennessee, Ryan Self and wife, Lauren of Wheaton, Illinois, Patrick Self and Gareth Gingell of Austin, Texas, Scott Self of College Station, Texas, Christopher Self and wife, Brandy of Woodlawn, Illinois, Ashley Johnson and husband, Greg, Hailey Moore and husband, Daniel of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Brian Mann and wife, Janelle of O’Fallon, Illinois, Kelli McLaurin and husband, Jason of Mount Vernon, Illinois, and Matthew Mann and wife, Amy of Wheaton, Illinois; and eleven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Carmen was preceded in death by her son, Brent Self; daughter, Holly Self; and twin grandsons, Adam and Wyatt Self.

Carmen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Vernon. As a Christian, Carmen always tried to have a kind word for anyone she met.
