Salem Fire Protection District firefighters searched around the scene of a car that ran off Green Street Road west of Lakeshore Drive Tuesday morning, but could never find the driver.
The initial call reporting a crash indicated the caller had seen the vehicle leave the roadway. Firefighters found no one in the car and a search around the vehicle on foot and with a thermal imaging camera did not find anyone.
Firemen report the vehicle was still warm to the touch indicating it had been running just a short time before being found.
The car sustained heavy damage running through some trees before coming partially to a stop on a lease road. It was towed from the scene.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Department is handling the wreck.
The call came in at 6:36 Tuesday morning.
