The Centralia City Council Monday night approved an ordinance allowing Delta Communications, LLC doing business as Clearwave Communications to use city right of way to lay fiber optic cable for fast internet service.

Now that the ordinance is in place, Clearwave representative Eric Gregg said Clearwave equipment should soon be in town to begin installation at a rate of up to 500 feet a day.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for growth for Centralia and it’s going to be a great project.  We are investing a lot of time and certainly are in it for the long haul.”

Gregg believes having fiber optics will help attract new business and industry to the community.   The installation will cover both residential and business areas.

City Manager Kory Smith says the ordinance covers damage caused by the cable borings.

“We have specific language in that clause with a 10-day turnaround for reclamation for any property disturbed being concrete sidewalks, grass whatever, that also includes the seeding of that area within 48 hours on top of that 10-day time frame for them to get everything back the way it was.”

Delta will pay the city $50,000 for the initial phase of the installation permit.
