Shirley L. Phelps, 90, of rural Centralia, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2023, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, in Lake St. Louis, Missouri.
She was born on June 26, 1932, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Troy and Grace (Mooney) Douthit. She married Louis R. Phelps on September 29, 1950, in Jefferson County, and he preceded her in death on October 13, 2006.
Shirley loved to meet new friends everywhere she went. In her spare time, she loved to quilt. She worked at the Dress Factory, and then at Dobbs Bargain City for 18 years. She was a member of Modern Woodmen for most of her life and was a member of Dix United Methodist Church in Dix.
Shirley is survived by two sons, Louis Duane Phelps and wife Brenda, and David Wayne Phelps, both of rural Centralia; sister, Ramona Flanagan of Mt. Vernon; brother, Charles Douthit and wife Mary of Dix; grandchildren, Christina Smith, Candice Toft, Tracey Merideth, Jackie Phelps, Allie Kabat, Ryan Phelps, Michael, Jesse, Karissa, and Lucy Wyder, and Kayce Roper; sixteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and pet child, Angel.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a great-grandson, Rocky; two sisters, Marilyn Blackwell and Wilma Mays; and two brothers, Voris “Bud” Douthit and Gene Douthit.
Funeral services for Mrs. Phelps will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at the Osborn Funeral Home in Dix. Burial will follow at Boyd Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service, Tuesday, at the funeral home.
