Harlan Chapin Foster of Belle Rive, born December 15, 1945, passed away on January 15, 2023. Harlan was the son of Walter Chapin Foster and Frances Miriam Foster, also of Belle Rive, both deceased. Harlan died peacefully of natural causes surrounded by his family.
Harlan is survived by his wife of over 54 years Catherine and his three daughters: local physician Dr. Christie Foster, SIUe professor Dr. Susan Foster, and veterinarian Dr. Julia Gawley of Louisville, Kentucky.
Harlan is also survived by his faithful son-in-law Kevin Gawley and his beloved grandchildren Katherine Caldwell, Benjamin Chapin Caldwell, and Myles Chapin Gawley.
Harlan was an Enrolled Actuary for over 40 years. He founded an employee benefits consulting firm, H. C. Foster & Company. He remained active in his profession, administering pension plans and advising clients, until his passing.
Harlan was also a 4th generation family farmer. Harlan and his daughter Susan enjoyed raising Charolais cattle and he took great pride in having established the first irrigated farm in Jefferson County. Harlan had a steadfast love for agriculture and all things John Deere. He was known for his unrelenting work ethic, actively farming with the support of the local Amish community until his passing.
Harlan also loved animals. He enjoyed the family’s horses and loved his terriers Junior and Teddy and border collies Bo and Luke, who were constant companions.
Harlan’s family remembers his unwavering loyalty and faithful presence throughout their lives. As children, Harlan’s daughters remember him likening himself to an oak tree that would never be blown down by the wind. He is remembered as having consistently embodied these wise and determined qualities, remaining deeply rooted in his farmland throughout his life. He will be missed.
