National Weather Service says greater chance of severe weather in deep Southern Illinois

The National Weather Service says the threat of severe thunderstorms is increasing, but the greatest threat is from the tip of Southern Illinois into the bootheel of Missouri and nearby parts of northern Arkansas and Tennessee.

That area is in the moderate area for strong and severe thunderstorms with the possibility of damaging winds, hail, and a few tornadoes.  A band across the southern fourth of Missouri into an area south of Carbondale and Marion is in the slight risk area and the region from St. Louis to just north of I-64 in Southern Illinois is in the marginal band.  North of that area across Clinton and Marion Counties, thunderstorms are possible but not expected to be severe.

The storm system will usher in cooler air by Wednesday when the high temperature is expected to be just 43 degrees.  But for Tuesday, showers and thunderstorms can be expected during the day with the temperature rising to 67 degrees.
