2023 01/05 – Verdell Hermsmeyer

Verdell Hermsmeyer, age 88, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese, Illinois on Sunday, January 1, 2023.

Mrs. Hermsmeyer was born at her home in Hoyleton, Illinois on August 12, 1934, the daughter of the late Gustav W. and Florence L. (nee Garling) Kasten.  She was baptized on August 26, 1934, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoyleton and confirmed on April 10, 1949, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in New Minden.  Verdell married Edwin Hermsmeyer on August 12, 1956, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoyleton and he survives in Carlyle.

In addition to her husband of 66 years, Mrs. Hermsmeyer is survived by two children – a daughter, Marla Frazier (Tom) of Arnold, Missouri, and a son, Gary Hermsmeyer (Kelli) of Godfrey, IL; her grandchildren – Trent Hermsmeyer (Ashley), Trina Reilmann (Alex), Tom Frazier (Sam), and Landon Perkins (Emily); her great-grandchildren – Iris, Tristan, Lexie, Maelyn, Cora, Easton, Jaxon, Madison, and Rylee; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hermsmeyer was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter – Janet Hermsmeyer; a sister – Alverna Nottmeyer (Virgil); her father-in-law and mother-in-law – William and Bertha Hermsmeyer; 3 sisters-in-law – Leona Nehrt (Clifford), Anna Nehrt (Elmer), and Ellen Kraus (Eric); and a brother-in-law – Wilbert Hermsmeyer (Shirley).

Mrs. Hermsmeyer was a homemaker and a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ferrin.  She attended Trinity Lutheran School in New Minden, St. John’s Lutheran School in New Minden, and St. John’s College in Winfield, Kansas for two years.  She taught school at Trinity Lutheran School in Hoffman for two years and taught Sunday school and weekday religion classes at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ferrin.  She was a member of the Silver Heirs at Bethlehem Church.

Verdell loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.  She will be remembered as a kind and caring person who loved all children, whether they be family, neighbors, or friends.  She was always willing to help her friends and family whenever she was needed.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ferrin with Rev. Jonathan Jennings, officiating.  Interment will follow at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday morning from 9:00 – 11:00 A.M.  In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family suggests memorial donations to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or to the charity of the donor’s choice.  Donations will be received at church or through Zieren Funeral Home, 1111 Clinton Street, Carlyle, IL 62231.  Online condolences can be shared at www.ZierenFuneralHome.com.
