Rural Dix home destroyed by fire

By Bruce Kropp Dec 24, 2022 | 1:23 PM

A rural Dix home was destroyed by fire Friday afternoon.

The home was fully involved in flames and was already starting to structurally collapse when firemen arrived at the scene on Snap Dragon Lane east of Dix.

The owner, William Fink, told firemen his furnace had gone out and he was heating the house with a wood-burning stove and kerosene heaters.   Firemen believe they may have been the cause of the fire that appeared to have started in the living room or kitchen area.   Fink indicated he had left the house about 20 minutes before the fire was discovered by a neighbor or passerby.

Jefferson Fire received mutual aid assistance on the scene from Kell, Bluford, and Mt. Vernon Firemen.  Wayne City and Woodlawn Firemen covered the Jefferson Fire Station in the event of another fire.

The extreme cold caused slick conditions in fighting the fire, but water continued to flow to fight the blaze.   There were no injuries.

The fire call came in at 12:34 Friday afternoon with firemen on the scene until four pm.
