Salem Township Hospital to introduce new cancer service

Salem Township Hospital President Alex Nazarian says the hospital is preparing to offer a new service to cancer patients.

The PET-scan will allow for the scanning of tumors, a service that area residents now have to travel out of town to receive.

Nazarian says the PET-scan will be a mobile service.

“One day a week is the initial plan in order for it to come over.  We need to have a strong physical foundation. It’s fairly heavy equipment so we need  ground strong enough for them to park on and it’s high voltage electricity being used so we need to build up electric lines and everything.”

Nazarian expects to have the infrastructure to be complete and the PET-scan to begin visits to Salem Township Hospital by the end of the year.

Since the PET-scan will not be connected to the hospital, the hospital will be acquiring a golf cart to transport patients from the main hospital building.

Nazarian says the hospital also has another new MRI unit with the latest updates.   He reports the MRI that had only been in operation a few months had to be sent back due to a helium leak that could not be repaired.  The hospital has been provided with another unit with new updates to compensate for the issues with the other unit.
