Patoka School District prepares for start of full day Pre-K and start of school

The Patoka School District will remain mask optional with the start of the new school year in August.

Justin Venhouse presided over his first meeting as Superintendent after being promoted from the principal’s position. He reports the parents of students who are close contacts will be notified, but it will be the parent’s decision on how to handle the situation.

The board also reviewed its safety plan and agreed to add up to four more security cameras and tint the first floor windows to prevent people from being able to see inside.

For the first time, Patoka will offer full day Pre-K. Venhouse says there had not been much interest in the half-day program and the move to full day has brought the enrollment of three to five year olds to 16 or 17 students. The board transferred fifth Grade Teacher Jessica Thompson to the Pre-K teaching position and hired Heather Montez as the Pre-K paraprofessional. The district is now searching for a new 5th grade teacher.

Venhouse reported the new inclusive playground equipment was now installed.

The Patoka School Board has voted to purchase a salad bar to offer healthier lunch choices.
