Shirley Ann Hines (Reed) of Teaticket, Massachusetts, passed away on August 29, 2026. Shirley was full of light and joy. She had a beautiful smile. When she wasn’t smiling (and she most often was), she had a look of serenity and contentment as she took in all that this world has to offer. She reveled in the beauty that nature and people offer. She loved to travel, read, watch movies, play cards, swim, go shopping, listen to music, attend church and, most of all, spend time with her family. She was quick to laugh and loved making others laugh. She loved her family and even left her long- time residence in Oklahoma to come to Falmouth and help raise her granddaughter Sonia after Sonia’s dad unexpectedly passed away. She did so at the drop of a hat and loved the time she got to spend with Sonia and her daughter Cindy.
Shirley was born on October 31, 1937, to Henry Taft Reed and Tiny Marine Reed. She married Bill Hines, and they had three children: Debbie, Patrick, and Cindy. She worked as a labor and delivery nurse at the beginning of her marriage. She later became a dental assistant and then a dental hygienist. Soon after her marriage ended, she obtained an associate degree in nursing while working full time and raising her three children. She continued her educational pursuits throughout her life and eventually earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, a Master of Education emphasizing gerontology, a Master of Science in Nursing specializing in community health and
completed all but her dissertation for a Ph.D. in education. She excelled in her educational endeavors, graduating magna cum laude and being inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Theta Tau for her scholastic excellence.
Shirley had exciting and challenging careers while pursuing her various degrees. In addition to the above careers, she worked at Salem and St. Mary’s hospitals as an RN; for the Oklahoma Nurses Association and Oklahoma Hospital Association as a state recruitment and retention coordinator; the V.A. Medical Center as a utilization review nurse; HCA Medical Center as director of nurse recruitment; Texas Woman’s University as a B.S.N. program advisor; and as a professor of nursing for the University of Oklahoma and Eastern Oklahoma State University. She was a published author in the VA Practitioner and was featured in The Oklahoma Nurse.
Shirley was predeceased by her beloved brothers Joe Bob Reed, Henry (Junior) Reed, and Billy Jim Reed; her parents; her son, Patrick Reed Hines; and her grandson, Teddy Pennypacker. She is survived by her daughters, Deborah (Ted) Pennypacker of Pryor Creek, OK, and Dr. Cynthia Hines of Teaticket, MA. She is also survived by her sisters, Kathy (Dick) Sproull of Plano, TX, and Donna (Keith) Patton of Salem, IL. She is survived by two grandchildren, Tamara Pennypacker Wright of Broken Arrow, OK, and Sonia Murphy of Teaticket, MA. She was also blessed with four great-grandchildren, four great-great- grandchildren (plus another born the same day she passed), and numerous much-loved nieces and nephews.
The world was a brighter and happier place because of Shirley. She will be greatly missed. In true Shirley fashion, we’re leaving standard black clothes in the closet and celebrating her with all the
bright, joyful colors she loved.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 3 p.m., Sunday, October 25, 2026, at Simply Gathered, 115 N Jefferson St, Salem, Illinois.
