Reva Eileen Grapperhaus, 86, of Carlyle, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at Barnes Jewish Hospital, with her daughters by her side.
Born on December 16th, 1939, in Carlyle, Illinois, the daughter of Harry H. and Ruby F. (Boatright) Kleber, who preceded her in death.
On October 3, 1959, Reva married the love of her life, Ralph J. Grapperhaus, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Carlyle, beginning a 65-year journey of love, laughter, and playful banter. Together they brought to life their three beautiful children: Julie (Mark) Walker of Caryle, IL, Todd Anthony (who died in infancy), and Gail (Dallas) Edwards of Keyesport, IL. She was the proud “Meemaw” to Haeli (Craig) Robke of Breese, Emily (Jared) Rakers of Hoffman, Olivia Walker (Lucas Essenpreis) of Breese, Dillon Edwards of Keyesport, and Ellie (Jordan) Huels of Carlyle. Her most prize possessions though were her 7 “Greats” who she loved with her whole heart, Walker & Wick Robke, Eliza & Zoey Rakers, Elsie & Owen Huels, Camille Essenpreis and soon to arrive Baby Essenpreis. Reva is also survived by her brother in-laws, Raymond Grapperhaus, Hank (Jeanie) Grapperhaus, sister-in-law, Marcella Grapperhaus, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father-in-law, Henry F. and Mary (Alberternst) Grapperhaus. Her brothers: Eddie (Jeanne) Kleber and Anthony “Corky” (Marie) Kleber. Her sisters-in-law: Del (Ray) Kreke, Sally (Benny) Benhoff, and Johanna (Herb) Laux; her brothers-in-law: Gene (Helen) Grapperhaus, Arnold (Jeanette, Lorraine) Grapperhaus, John Grapperhaus, Ben Grapperhaus, Larry (Margie) Grapperhaus, and Cynthia Grapperhaus.
A Carlyle High School graduate, Reva worked several jobs throughout the Carlyle community.
Reva had a spirit all her own—feisty, mischievous, and a natural people person, always ready for fun. In her younger years, she enjoyed howling at the moon with her beloved Coyotes, creating stories that reflected her adventurous nature. As time passed, her adventures changed, but her appreciation for life’s simple pleasures never faded. Whether taking daily drives around town, trying her luck on the penny slots at the boat, spending Wednesdays at Ponderosa where she made lifelong friends, or people-watching at Walmart with Ralph, she found joy in everyday moments.
Always a proud “Meemaw,” she had a fierce love for her family, especially her Grands and her Greats, and never missed an opportunity to be with them. Always present for any event and life milestone and made sure they knew how much she loved them. “The greatest wonders man can build will all in time decay, but the wonder of a Mother’s love will never fade away.”
And if there was one thing to know about Reva, it was that while her husband may have been the “Paymaster,” she was undoubtedly the “Penny-Pincher”. She valued every dollar, never let one go without a fight, and always had a coupon ready. Her quick wit, and feisty personality were part of the charm that made her unforgettable.
These memories—her laughter, stories, endearing quirks, and unmistakable spirit—will carry on the legacy of Reva. They remind us that the most meaningful legacies are found not only in life’s milestones, but also in the everyday adventures and cherished moments that continue to make us smile long after someone is gone.
“May all be good, may you be well, and in your life, may angels dwell”
Reva’s wishes were for private services and burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery at a later date.
Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mrs. Grapperhaus are suggested to Carlyle in Bloom or Christmas in Carlyle, and will be received through Zieren Funeral Home, 1111 Clinton St. Carlyle, IL 62231.
