Marion County Animal Control Officer Whitney Purcell says improvement work is underway at the county’s new animal control facility on Woods Lane in Centralia.
She told the County Board’s Community Committee Tuesday night that a $5,000 donation has allowed them to purchase a new lawn mower, complete installation of fence, and pour concrete for a new portable four run building the county is in the process of purchasing. Purcell was told to order the building now since they will soon have the foundation in place.
Purcell reported 31 dogs were brought to the facility in the last month, while 48 left the facility. Of those that left, 24 were adopted out, 11 were reclaimed by their owner, and 13 were sent to rescue. Purcell was pleased with the increase in the number of owners who came back to get their dogs.
There are now 32 dogs being held. 10 of those cannot be adopted out due to pending court cases and four others are currently in the seven-day period when owners can retrieve their dogs.
