A short in the cord of a floor lamp apparently started a fire in the living room of a Salem home early Sunday morning.

Salem Assistant Fire Chief Bill Fulton says the smoky fire was at the Michael Mason home at 1024 North Jackson Street.  The cord went underneath a rocking chair and apparently had frayed over time from the rocking motion.  The short started a fire in the carpeting under the cord and spread to the large cushions on the rocking chair and to a wall near the chair.

An attempt had been made to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher prior to the fire department’s arrival.  Fulton says the remaining fire was quickly knocked down, and smoke was vented from the home.

Salem Police were first to arrive on the scene and assisted the two occupants of the home in removing two of their dogs.  Salem Fire assisted with the removal of a third dog upon their arrival.  There were no injuries reported to either the two occupants or their pets.

The fire call came in at 3:30 Sunday morning.  Firemen were on the scene for about 45 minutes.  Odin Firemen provided mutual aid assistance.
