Ramona J. Cushman, 74, of Centralia, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2026, at Fireside House in Centralia. She was born on September 19, 1951, in Marion County, the daughter of Alfred and Garnell (Mattmiller) Hugo. She married Darwin Cushman Jr., and their son was born of this union. They later divorced.
Survivors include her son, Darwin “DG” Cushman and wife Shawnda of Centralia; three grandchildren, Jayden, Jaxon, and Julia; brother, Roger Hugo; sisters, Roxann Knuff of Carlyle, and Rhonda Mackey and husband Lenny of Carlyle; and many extended family members and friends.
Ramona was preceded in death by her parents; her ex-husband, Darwin “Gene” Cushman Jr.; and brother-in-law, Steve Knuff.
Ramona had a passion for learning and worked as a teacher at Grand Prairie School for 35 years until her retirement. She was a wonderful teacher who delivered lessons to grateful students in a way that had them looking forward to school every day. Ramona was a wonderful mentor and great supporter for so many students, fellow teachers, and friends. Ramona loved unraveling the plot of a good book and never missed watching her favorite game shows. She was the heart of her family and loved every moment spent with her kids and grandkids, sharing laughter and love.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 14, 2026, at the Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Centralia, with Pastor Don Schaffer officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Evergreen Cemetery in Central City. Relatives and friends are welcome to the visitation from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2026, as well as one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home in Centralia. Memorials may be made in Ramona’s honor to Darwin Cushman to further Ramona’s grandchildren’s schooling.
