When the week started, the finances of the Salem Lions Club Post Prom were in poor condition. But when WJBD-WSIQ made the problem known and Security Alarm provided a $1,000 matching donation the situation changed rapidly and by Thursday afternoon $7,500 was raised.
Tabitha Meador who heads the Post Prom Committee for the Lions says the contributions were beyond belief, but she isn’t surprised because the Salem community is always quick to help.
With the extra money, Meador says it will be an even better Post Prom for the students.
“With the generosity this year, we’re able to turn around and give that right back to the kids,” Meador said. “We’re upping the number of door prizes that we will have that evening and to draw more kids’ names throughout the night so that hopefully every kid goes home with something. We’ve heard from the school that they’ve got 268 kids registered for post prom. Through the night, we’ll be able to have that many prizes to give out, and we’ll have the t-shirts at the end. Hopefully everyone goes home with a t-shirt and a prize.”
Meador says all of the contributions will also allow for a better starting point for Post Prom next year.
After the initial $1,000 matching donation from Security Alarm, the Salem Community High School Booster Club added another $1,000 matching donation. A Salem Community High School graduate who now lives in Baltimore who saw the story made a $2,000 donation. A trip to the Salem Rotary Club let to the club making a $500 contribution and one of its members providing another $1,000. Most of the other donations were in the $100 to $200 range.
