Kaskaskia College held a dinner and ceremony on Wednesday for students who completed certificates through the Workforce Empowerment Initiative. 8 students were present to be recognized at the ceremony and 16 in total were awarded certificates this spring in fields including carpentry, culinary arts, nursing, welding, and commercial driving.

The WEI aims to expand access for learners who would otherwise be unable to afford postsecondary education by providing free tuition, fees and materials, as well as ongoing assistance for those who need it including transportation and childcare.

Giving student comments, LPN student Nalani McClain talked about the support she received from WEI.

“They didn’t just support me academically, they supported me as a person,” McClain said. “There were times when I needed help with basic necessities, and WEI stepped in without hesitation. Those things seem small to some, but for me they were a huge difference. What meant the most to me was having people who genuinely cared and listened to me.”

Vice President of student services, Amy Zanton, talked about the goals of WEI.

“The Workforce Empowerment Initiative has been a pathway to essential skills, hands-on learning and meaningful opportunities that prepare our students for the realities of today’s workforce,” Zanton said. “Your achievements highlight what happens when learning truly means opportunity, when dedicated mentors and industry partners come together to support you, and when a community commits to lifting each other up.”

Kaskaskia College has had the WEI program since 2021.Those interested in the Workforce Equity Initiative or wishing to apply can visit the Kaskaskia College website.
