The Salem Fire Protection District was successful in rescuing a one-week-old puppy that had gotten its head stuck in a drain pipe on Friday night.

Firemen were called to a home on Selmaville Road, where the puppy had stuck his head into a disconnected drain in a bathtub being used to house the mother and her pups.

While firemen first considered cutting into the pipe to free the dog, Assistant Fire Chief Bill Fulton managed to get the head to slip back out.   He said he applied much of what he learned from working with small sheep on his farm over the years.

The dog escaped injury during the ordeal.
