Centralia Varsity Orphans fell to Carbondale 5-4 on Thursday on the final play of the game. The game was tied at four in the bottom of the ninth when Gabe Otey singled, scoring one run.
Carbondale were the first to get on the board in the first when Connor Daly singled, scoring two runs.
Carbondale committed an error, which helped Centralia Varsity Orphans tie the game at two in the top of the fourth.
Centralia Varsity Orphans took the lead in the top of the fifth. Michael Organ singled, scoring two runs, to give Centralia Varsity Orphans the edge, 4-2.
Tyler Karayiams doubled down the right field line, which helped Carbondale tie the game at four in the bottom of the seventh.
Karayiams earned the win for Carbondale. The pitcher surrendered four hits and zero runs over four and one-third innings, striking out 10 and walking three. Gabe Houser took the loss for Centralia Varsity Orphans. The hurler went one and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out four and walking one. Dax Snow stepped on the bump first for Centralia Varsity Orphans. The hurler gave up three hits and two runs (zero earned) over four innings, striking out six and walking none. Cole Roberts started the game for Carbondale. The pitcher allowed two hits and four runs (three earned) over four and two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking two.
Preston Feig led Centralia Varsity Orphans with two hits in four at bats. Valon Williams and Organ each drove in one run for Centralia Varsity Orphans. Rhett Lambert stole three bases. Centralia Varsity Orphans stole five bases in the game.
Carbondale piled up nine hits in the game. Leadoff hitter Karayiams led Carbondale with three hits in five at bats. Otey collected two hits for Carbondale in five at bats.
