The Salem Historical Commission will celebrate William Jennings Bryan’s birthday with an open house and program on Saturday.

Bryan was born on March 19th, 1860.  He was a three-time presidential nominee who also was a Nebraska congressman and Secretary of State in the Wilson administration.

Commission member Mark Larimore explains the days activities.

“The museum downtown and his birthplace will be open from 9:00 in the morning until about 2:45,” Larimore said. “At 3 o’clock, we have a special speaker who will be at the Presbyterian church. She’s Dr. Claire Jerry. She’s recently retired from the Smithsonian. Her area of interest was the department of political history. She’s toured the Bryan home, and she’s going to talk about Bryan as far as how he affected the political history of our country.”

There is no admission fee for any of the activities, although donations will be accepted.
