The Jefferson County Fire Protection District passed a bond issue in Tuesday’s election, clearing the way for construction of a new fire station near their current location on the south side of Mt. Vernon.  The final vote was 1,349 in favor and 1,004 against.

Ryan Clinton says they are very appreciative of the voters.

“This is something that’s been coming and has been needed for many years,” Clinton said. “Just to see the support that our voters gave us in passing this bond referendum, we just want to say thank you to all of our community members. It means a lot to us, and it shows that they understand where we’re at and the need that we have to get to where we can continue to provide the professional service that they expect, that they deserve, and that we want to give them.”

Clinton explains the next step.

“Now it is time to where we get to sit down, start doing a lot of the technical drawings of the building and get all the fine details worked out before we can put it out to bid. We would hope some time in the summer time we can get it out to bid and have a good competitive bidding process, get some bids back, and hopefully look at early groundbreaking at the end of the summer, possibly in the early fall time.”

Firemen noted during the campaign the current fire station is not big enough to handle all the present-day equipment.

The bond issue will cost homeowners $5 per month on a home valued at $100,000.
