Marion County Sheriff Kevin Cripps says the county will be receiving more money for holding county prisoners.
He has negotiated an increase in the daily rate starting February first for holding prisoners from $65 to $85 and the cost of guards required to transport prisoners from $25 to $39 an hour.
“If we maintain 25 federal inmates, that’s an extra $170,000 to $180,000 per year that would be brought in from holding those inmates,” Cripps said. “Part of that would be expended with the increasing health insurance that we take once in a while. Hopefully that will offset, plus still make money for the county.”
Under the contract, the county is required to transport federal prisoners to their court appearances.
