A Mt. Vernon home was gutted by fire Thursday night.
Mt. Vernon City Firefighters say Felicia McKinney and a child were able to escape from the home at 1205 South 12th without injury once they learned it was on fire.
First arriving Mt. Vernon firemen found heavy smoke coming out the front of the home and later determined the fire had spread throughout the first floor. Firemen were able to keep the fire from spreading to the basement and attic.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Mt. Vernon City Fire investigators.
The Red Cross was called to assist the family.
The fire call came in at 8:05 Thursday night with firemen remaining on the scene for almost four hours.
Jefferson Fire, Webber Township, and Kell Firemen all provided mutual aid on the scene. Wayne City and Benton Firemen stood by at the Mt. Vernon Fire Station in the event of another fire.
