The southbound lanes of I-57 between the Kinmundy and Salem exits were closed for about two hours Monday morning when a semi-trailer caught fire.
The Salem Fire Protection District reports the driver for Insight Global Logistics had pulled the truck onto the side of the highway. However, the roadway still needed to be closed for firefighting efforts by the Salem and Odin Fire Protection Districts. The truck was hauling auto parts.
The driver of the truck told authorities he first noticed smoke coming from one of the tires. The fire spread to the front third of the truck and a small area of the cab.
The fire call first came in around five Monday morning, with firemen clearing the scene shortly after two hours, when one southbound lane was reopened. It took several more hours to move the trailer and reopen the second lane.
